Description
The first art gallery in New York's SoHo, Paula Cooper Gallery, opened in 1968 with an exhibition to benefit the Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam. The show featured works by Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Robert Mangold, and Robert Ryman, among others, as well as Sol LeWitt’s inaugural wall drawing. For five decades, the gallery’s artistic agenda has remained focused on, though not limited to, conceptual and minimal art.
The gallery is currently seeking a full-time Assistant Image Archivist. The ideal candidate will have excellent problem solving and time management skills, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a keen eye for detail. Proficiency in Photoshop, Indesign and the Adobe suite is required. Knowledge of digital imaging and archival best practices is a plus. Enthusiasm for contemporary arts and a minimum of 1-2 years of professional experience in a gallery or arts institution are desirable qualifications.
Image Archive
- Digitize and color-correct hard copy archival documentation (scanning 35 mm slides, 4 x 5 transparencies, and/or photo prints) promptly for requests for represented and exhibited artists.
- Assist with rehousing archival material.
- Download and file image batches from other institutions and artist studios on the image server.
- Request hi-res images of external artist exhibitions and installations.
- Maintain consistent naming, saving, and storing conventions and oversee the organization of a high volume of image/video assets.
- Update relevant captioning and image credit information as needed.
- Assist with maintaining the gallery’s file sharing and video-streaming platforms.
- Assist in updating the gallery database, gallery website, ArtBinder, Artsy, Artnet, and other online platforms.
- Assist in the production of PDF packets for sales, fairs, and exhibitions as needed.
- Produce framed composites, and tailored mock-ups.
- Updates existing images through retouching, color correction, cropping and image rotating
- Assist in the production of assets for digital advertisements
- Assist in creation of video content for socials when requested (made in Premiere)
- Assist with creating Online Viewing Rooms for fairs and updating content on website backend
Rights & Reproductions
- Assist the Archivist with image reproduction requests for catalogues, gallery websites, institution websites, exhibition promotional materials, TV shows, video/documentary projects, press, etc.
- Distribute artwork images to clients who have acquired artworks.
- Provide images to institutions for catalogues and other materials for artists’ exhibitions.
- Request installation views from venues displaying the work of our 40+ artists or Estates’ work and save them on the server accordingly.
- Source and send archival images to artists’ studios.
- Assist with image captions for press, social media, and other image requests and licensing tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field (Photography, Design, etc).
- Experience with Adobe Suite applications required (Photoshop, Bridge, InDesign, Premiere, Illustrator, Lightroom, Acrobat).
- Experience with data-heavy file-transfer platforms (WeTransfer, Dropbox, Vimeo, etc.) and Artbase/Filemaker
- Experience accessing files and creating folders with a Mac OS file server
