In conjunction with the Charta/Libellum publication of Judge

NEW YORK—Paula Cooper at 465, Paula Cooper Gallery’s new exhibition space on West 23rd Street, is pleased to open its fall season with Judge, an exhibition of works by artist Wayne Gonzales and poet Vincent Katz based on their Charta/Libellum publication of the same title. Judge will open on September 4 and will remain on view through September 22. A reception, reading, and book signing will take place on September 15 from 6-8pm at 465 West 23rd Street.

In 2005, during the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge John Roberts, Katz wrote a long poem made entirely of text taken from The New York Times, highly edited and compressed, focusing on color words and details in order to get at emotions behind the facts as presented by the newspaper. Around 2002, Gonzales had similarly begun to work with images of the Bush administration and representations of patriotism in an attempt to record the emotional and psychological climate of the time. His source images were appropriated from the Internet, taken apart and reconstructed into graphic works that, while recognizable, have a haunting, ghostly quality. The book blends Katz’ texts with Gonzales’s images and graphic treatment of information to present a galvanized meditation on the current state of American politics.

Wayne Gonzales was born in New Orleans in 1957 and started exhibiting in the mid-1990s. His work has been shown in various international venues including P.S.1 Center for Contemporary Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain, Dôle; and the Consortium, Dijon, France. Gonzales is represented in public and private collections in the United States and Europe, most notably the Dallas Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Neuberger Museum of Art. Gonzales lives and works in New York.

Vincent Katz is a poet, translator, art critic, editor, and curator. He is the author of nine books of poetry, including Cabal of Zealots (1988, Hanuman Books), Understanding Objects (2000, Hard Press), and Rapid Departures (2005, Ateliê Editorial). He won the 2005 National Translation Award, given by the American Literary Translators Association, for his book of translations from Latin, The Complete Elegies of Sextus Propertius (2004, Princeton University Press). He was awarded a Rome Prize Fellowship in Literature at the American Academy in Rome for 2001-2002. He was chosen to be a Guest of the Director for a one-month residency at the American Academy in Berlin in Spring, 2006.
