Press Release

NEW YORK— Mel Ziegler’s drawings will be exhibited in the front room of the Paula Cooper Gallery, 534 West 21st Street, from 22 April through 3 June 2000.

In his work, Mel Ziegler has exposed the underlying physical properties of specific settings, often examining the intersections of public and private space. For example, in Taking Measure (Going Public) (1999), a performance for ArtPace in San Antonio, Texas, he recorded his body temperature from the inside of a high-rise office building and projected it on LED sign hanging outside.

The drawings in this exhibition are whimsical proposals for outdoor projects. Ziegler’s work presents scenarios that literally reflect the temporal and physical qualities of particular environments. Many of these drawings feature time and temperature displays in locations ranging from a field of sunflowers to a railroad car and battlefield.

Mel Ziegler lives and works in Texas, where he teaches studio art at the University of Texas, Austin. Formerly, Ziegler collaborated with the late Kate Ericson under the name of Ericson/Ziegler.
