At the 2025 edition of West Bund Art & Design, Paula Cooper Gallery will present A History of Commitment: 1968–Future, a special project with two interconnecting parts: an excerpt from the gallery's archive and an exhibition. This presentation expands upon the historical perspective introduced with Paula Cooper Gallery’s Shanghai pop-up in 2024.
An archival section offers an immersive glimpse into the gallery’s history through documents, photographs, and rare materials drawn from the 720 exhibitions the gallery has produced since 1968.
The exhibition section stages a compelling dialogue between two artists at opposite ends of the generational spectrum: Mark di Suvero (b. 1933) and Eric N. Mack (b. 1987)—the gallery’s oldest and youngest artists. Their works converge in an extraordinary experience of movement and spatial flow. Shanghai-born di Suvero’s monumental sculpture Hugs (2021), currently on view at the West Bund Museum. Meanwhile, Mack’s vibrant textile installations activate space with color, texture, and gesture, pushing abstraction into dynamic new forms.
Together, these two presentations embody what defines Paula Cooper Gallery: an ethos where art is a continuum of relationships, ideas, and commitments—a living history that stretches from 1968 into the future.
