NEW YORK—Dan Flavin works from the late 1960s to the 1980s and a selection of drawings by sculptors will be on view in the main and front galleries, respectively, at Paula Cooper Gallery on 534 West 21st Street from 11 December 1999 through 29 January 2000.

The Flavin exhibition consists of a selection of fluorescent light sculptures. Four of these fluorescent sculptures — leaning vertically against a wall, horizontally on the floor, or propped in the corner of two walls — are composed of an equal number of pink and yellow bulbs. In describing the properties of this medium, the artist writes:

Regard the light and you are fascinated—inhibited from grasping its limits at each end… Realizing this, I knew that the actual space of a room could be broken down and played with by planting illusions of real light (electric light) at crucial junctions in the room’s composition. [1]

Most of the exhibited works are dedicated to particular individuals, including artist Donald Judd and dealer Margo Leavin.

Drawings by sculptors including Carl Andre, Louise Bourgeois, Mark Di Suvero, Dan Flavin, Gilbert and George, Donald Judd, Robert Grosvenor, Roni Horn, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg & Coosje van Bruggen, Joel Shapiro and David Smith will be on view in the front gallery space.
