Press Release

NEW YORK—The Paula Cooper Gallery is pleased to present Christian Marclay’s critically acclaimed _Video Quartet (2001). The exhibition will run from 12 December to 31 January, 2003 at 521 West 21st Street.

Video Quartet is a four-screen DVD projection synchronizing hundreds of Hollywood film excerpts that feature actors and musicians playing instruments or making sound. Compelling both visually and acoustically, the piece is “a mixture of laptop multimedia collage and more conventional acts of cinematic and musical arranging that shows Marclay at the peak of his powers…” (Artforum).

Video Quartet was commissioned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with the Fondation Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg, and was shown earlier this spring at SFMOMA as part of an exhibition entitled Sampling/Christian Marclay. The work will be part of Christian Marclay’s upcoming mid-career retrospective, scheduled to open at the UCLA Hammer Museum on 31 May, 2003. The retrospective, curated by Russell Ferguson, will subsequently travel to the Seattle Art Museum; the Bard College Center for Curatorial Studies, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York; and the Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland, among other venues.

In addition to this exhibition, the American Museum of the Moving Image will screen Christian Marclay’s Up and Out (1998), a work marrying the visual footage from Antonioni’s Blow Up (1966) with the soundtrack from De Palma’s Blow Out (1981). The screening will take place on 9 January 2003 at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion with the artist. The American Museum of the Moving Image is located at 35th Avenue at 36th Street in Astoria, Queens.
