Robert Shore interviews Carey Young for Elephant Magazine: “I filmed only female lawyers, judges and defendants at court. By implication, if an entire legal system was run by women, then what kind of society would this be? Is it a matriarchy? Is it utopian? And in such a society, or such a legal system, what role do the men play? I included shots of various men in the piece, but they seem diminished. For example, we see male lawyers trying to persuade female judges, who only occasionally bestow attention, and we see male lawyers wait endlessly and nervously outside a courtroom for a female judge who never lets them in, or we see an old gentleman slowly wheel a weighty trolley of archival files through the dark corridors. The men seem to be in support roles, or isolated and secondary. It was fun to reverse the truth like that.”View Source

NEW YORK – The Paula Cooper Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Sol LeWitt in the exhibition space of the prestigious publisher Cahiers d’Art, at 15, rue du Dragon in Paris. The exhibition, timed to open during the FIAC Art Fair, will run from October 20, 2016 through January 28, 2017.
The exhibition will present Wall Drawing #1183: Eight bands of color,1 first installed at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 2005. The work is a flowing expanse of interweaving lines of red, yellow, blue, green, purple, orange, grey and black on a white background. The drawing was realized by a team of draftsmen and women who followed the artist’s original sketch as well as a plan drawn specifically for the Cahiers d’Art space. Luminous and profoundly musical, the work wraps around the entire space, offering an enveloping vision of rhythmic, undulating color.
The exhibition will also present three-dimensional works and works on paper by the artist.
Sol LeWitt (1928 – 2007) was born in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1953 he moved to New York where had his first one-person show at the John Daniels Gallery in 1965. The Gemeentemuseum in The Hague presented his first retrospective exhibition in 1970, and his work was later shown in a major mid-career retrospective curated by Alicia Legg at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1978. LeWitt’s works are in numerous public collections including: the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Centre National d’Art Moderne Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Turin’s Castello di Rivoli; the Moderna Museet Stockholm; and the Tate Gallery, London. In November 2007 the Centre Pompidou-Metz organized a retrospective of the artist’s wall drawings, “Sol LeWitt. Wall Drawings from 1968 to 2007.” A year later, “Sol LeWitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective” opened at MassMOCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), and will remain on view for 25 years.
Cahiers d’Art is one of the world’s most distinguished publishers of the visual arts. Founded in 1926 by Christian Zervos as an artistic and literary journal, Cahiers d’Art soon became a major publishing house renowned for its publications on key figures of 20th century modern art in France, such as Matisse, Braque, Léger, Ernst, Arp, Calder and Giacometti. In 1932, Cahiers d’Art began publishing the landmark Pablo Picasso par Christian Zervos, a definitive catalogue of works by the artist, which was re-issued in French and English in 2014. Cahiers d’Art was relaunched as a publishing house and gallery in October 2012 and has presented exhibitions of Rosemarie Trockel, Ellsworth Kelly and others to date.
